The Poopie Coopie (Most Disappointing Movie of the Year) - American Made

Even as an eternal Tom Cruise fan (and knowing what he's capable of delivering), I just don't understand how this film was so widely accepted as it was in 2017. It felt sloppy, chaotic. Cruise's Barry Seal protagonist character never really did it for me and at the end of the day it just felt like a messier more mediocre version of Blow.

1. A Ghost Story

Nothing lingered with me after 2017 like A Ghost Story. It's dreary, slow, cold. But it's so hypnotic and has such heavy and memorable imagery. In a way it feels authentic. Like if you actually passed, were not able to let go of some place or some person or some thing - you would be stuck in this nothingness dimension. This lovesick netherworld. Emotional purgatory. David Lowery really created an outstanding film here - and had the artistic balls to put a sheet over an Oscar winner for close to 90 minutes.

Poopie Coopie: Most Disappointing Film of 2016 - Don't Breathe (Review)

When there is a lot of hype on a modern horror film these days, it brings up memories of 2014's It Follows. There was probably an equal amount of hype surrounding this film in 2016. But it doesn't deliver. Not only that, it's a surprisingly well-reviewed film. I just don't understand why.

Sometimes a movie changes you forever. When I walked out of the theater after viewing this, I felt like I got punched in the stomach. But Manchester mirrors life in some ways. Life is filled with a lot of beautiful moments. But sometimes horrible things happen. Horrible things that forever change you, your family. Sometimes you can't move on from these things. Manchester is fortunately or unfortunately one of those films that will never leave me.

Announcing the Coopies!

I am happy to announce the Coopie Awards! The five best films of the year. This no popularity contest. There have been no payouts, at least none that I will disclose here. But seriously. The Oscars have become over-bedazzled glam-porn. A mershy popularity contest. We don't care who you are wearing. The battle of the blow-hards. There is already talk of Redford getting Best Actor this year because he hasn't won one yet and he's on the wrong side of 70. Scorcese finally got his overdue Oscar for The Departed, mostly due to the fact that the Academy was apologetic for not giving it to him for Goodfellas. There will be no horrible performances here. No fat. Just the five awards for the five best films of the year. And one award for the worst. The soon-to-be-famous solitary Poopie Coopie. Take that, Razzies!
